Good news for car buyers in India! The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is all set to introduce its first flex-fuel vehicle in the domestic market. The company is likely to begin this journey with the much-loved Wagon R, which will be launched in the coming months.

What Are Flex-Fuel Cars?

Flex-fuel cars are vehicles that can run not only on petrol but also on different ethanol-petrol blends (from E20 to E85). Compared to traditional petrol engines, these are considered cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

Maruti’s Big Step Towards Carbon Neutrality

Maruti’s parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), recently announced during its technology strategy update that production of flex-fuel vehicles will begin in India within this financial year. This is part of the company’s long-term goal to achieve a carbon-neutral society.

Biogas Project To Benefit Farmers Too

Suzuki also revealed that it is focusing on the biogas business in India. In collaboration with dairy cooperatives, the company is setting up plants that will convert cattle dung from the country’s 300 million cattle into biogas. This fuel will be used in Maruti’s already popular CNG cars, while farmers will get additional income by selling cow dung.

Wagon R Flex-Fuel: 79% Lower Emissions

Earlier this year at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Maruti showcased a Wagon R flex-fuel prototype. This hatchback can run on fuel blends ranging from E20 to E85. The company claims that on E85 fuel, the car’s tailpipe emissions will be reduced by up to 79%, without any compromise on performance. In simple words, the Wagon R flex-fuel will deliver the same power as the regular petrol model.

When Will It Launch?

According to reports, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R flex-fuel will be launched in the first quarter of CY 2026. While the brand’s current lineup is already compatible with E20 fuel, the focus is now shifting to full-fledged flex-fuel vehicles.

Conclusion
With this move, Maruti Suzuki is not only offering Indian customers a cleaner and more affordable mobility option but also contributing to rural income growth and sustainable energy. The Wagon R flex-fuel could well become a milestone in India’s green mobility journey.
